"Bari's resources helped me become the advocate my son needed. I learned to ask the right questions and support him with confidence."

Learning to Advocate for My Son

When my son was diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism at age 8, I felt completely unprepared. My wife and I had never heard of the condition. The endocrinologist explained it in medical terms, but I left the appointment feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about how to help our son manage his health.

The early days were challenging. We were learning about calcium supplementation, understanding why certain symptoms appeared, and trying to explain to our son why he needed to take medications when he felt fine. I wanted to be a strong advocate for him, but I didn't have the knowledge or confidence to do so effectively.

Everything changed when I discovered Bari's work. Her columns about managing hypoparathyroidism, her nutrition guides, and her honest discussions about the emotional side of chronic illness gave me the foundation I needed. I learned what questions to ask doctors, how to recognize warning signs, and most importantly, how to help my son feel supported and not alone.

Bari's advocacy work showed me that hypoparathyroidism doesn't have to limit my son's life. It's manageable with proper knowledge and support. I've become more confident in my role as his health advocate, and I can see the positive impact it's having on him. He's more engaged in his own care, and he knows his parents are equipped to help him navigate this journey.

I've also connected with other parents through Bari's community. Sharing experiences with people who truly understand what we're going through has been invaluable. We support each other, share resources, and celebrate our children's achievements. Bari created a space where families don't feel isolated by this diagnosis.

Now, three years into my son's diagnosis, I can confidently say that Bari's advocacy work has made our family stronger. She gave us the tools and the community we needed to not just manage a chronic condition, but to thrive as a family.
