Jessica's Story

I was 22 when I had thyroid surgery for a benign nodule. My surgeon said it was routine, and I'd be back to normal in a few weeks. What he didn't mention was that I might develop hypoparathyroidism.

Three weeks post-surgery, I started experiencing the strangest symptoms—tingling in my fingers, muscle cramps, and this overwhelming sense of anxiety. My primary care doctor ran tests and told me my calcium levels were dangerously low. That's when I learned about hypoparathyroidism.

The diagnosis felt isolating. I was 23, supposed to be starting my career, and instead I was managing a chronic condition I'd never heard of. My friends didn't understand why I had to take calcium supplements multiple times a day or why certain foods affected how I felt. My family was supportive but couldn't really relate to what I was experiencing.
