Bari Gordon Vapnek, known as Brave Butterfly Bari, is a patient advocate, columnist, and speaker dedicated to transforming the patient experience for those living with hypoparathyroidism. Through powerful storytelling, strategic advocacy, and authentic community building, she empowers patients, educates healthcare professionals, and drives systemic change.
Bari's journey with hypoparathyroidism began in 1998 following a total thyroidectomy. For 18 years, she felt completely alone—unaware that thousands of others shared her diagnosis. A life-threatening calcium crash in 2016 forced her to search for her community and discover that she was never alone in her struggle.
As Patient #1 in the groundbreaking Transcon PTH clinical trial, Bari received her first dose in December 2019 after years of decline. Her participation directly contributed to the FDA approval of Yorvipath, a transformative therapy that has changed the standard of care for hypoparathyroidism patients worldwide.
Today, Bari is a contributing columnist for Hypoparathyroidism News, where she shares honest, vulnerable stories that help patients feel less alone and inspire hope. She has testified before the FDA on patient advocacy, spoken at medical conferences, and built a supportive community of 2,000+ members.
Bari is a proud mother of two accomplished children and believes that adversity is a catalyst for greatness. Her mission is simple but powerful: "No one should ever feel alone in their diagnosis. When patients share their truth, hearts change. When hearts change, systems change."
